The carryout culture in the D.C. area is huge. On a shadier note, one restaurants was revealed as profiting from another sort of operation: a drug front. Yesterday, U.S. Attorney forD.C. Ron Machen said that the owner of The D.C. Fish Carryout on 14th Street in Columbia Heights has pleaded guilty to using the store as a front for the sale of crack. According to evidence, Suk "Bruce" In Hyun allowed 25-year-old Tommy Hill and 44-year-old Craig McKoy to sell crack out of the store.
Starting in July 2011, Hill and McKoy paid Hyun to allow drug deals to take place inside of the store, outside of the view of police. Ten to 15 times a day, seven days a week, McKoy would meet with potential customers and bring them to the store. Hyun would make a phone call, and Hill would arrive with the crack to complete the transaction.
It all came crashing down last December when two undercover police officers bought crack inside of the store. In February, police raided the store and discovered 17 illegal digital scales, tens of thousands of zip lock bags and over a pound of synthetic marijuana. Hyun will be sentenced in January and faces as many as 30 years in prison.
