Carrie Underwood is set to star in NBC's live telecast of The Sound is Music next year, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The three-hour event is being helmed by Smash producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron - who are both also producing the Academy Awards in February.
Underwood is set to play the iconic role of Maria von Trapp, who was previously portrayed by Julie Andrews in the 1965 film version of the musical. "Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp," NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said of the casting. "She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist."
The telecast will air on NBC during the holiday season of 2013,
