It looks like Spider-Man’s tangled love life just got a bit more complicated as Variety is reporting that Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) is in talks to play Mary Jane Watson in director Marc Webb’s follow-up to The Amazing Spider-Man. Nothing is finalized yet, but Woodley is the studio’s top choice for the role. Her stock has been on the rise ever since she earned a Golden Globe nomination for her work in The Descendants, so this move makes sense for both sides.

Mary Jane Watson was most memorably played by Kirsten Dunst during Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy, and in the comics she eventually became Peter Parker’s wife before the devil came along and dissolved their marriage. Seriously.

The website is also reporting that Electro might be the villain in the sequel. This follows Webb’s vision of not re-using villains from Raimi’s movies, aside from possibly the Green Goblin. If Electro is used, expect there to be some tie between him and Norman Osborn as it looks like things are heading towards an appearance by the Goblin eventually. Possibly in a third installment. But that’s just speculation on our part.
