One of the most memorable moments in the history of the Spider-Man comics took place in Amazing Spider-Man #121, when Peter Parker’s longtime girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, was killed by the Green Goblin. It’s a moment that the Web Slinger still struggles with because of the blame that he heaped on himself for the loss of his first true love.

Right when Emma Stone was cast as Stacy in this year’s Amazing Spider-Man movie reboot, fans started to speculate that perhaps she would meet the same fate as her comic book counterpart at some point in the film. But after she got out of the first movie unscathed, there was a thought that maybe she would survive throughout the whole trilogy. However, now an article from The Hollywood Reporter turns that theory upside-down.

The article confirmed that Shailene Woodley will play Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but it will only be a small part. It’s only in the third movie when the role will expand. The site then goes on to state that it will only expand because the studio is looking to build towards the “Death of Gwen Stacy” storyline.

We don’t know if Gwen will kick it in the second or third movie, but we’re guessing she won’t live to see the end of the series. All we know is that when she does go, Mary Jane will probably be quick to swoop in on Peter.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will hit theaters on May 2, 2014.
