A 29-year-old mother in New Zealand has been convicted for giving her infant marijuana through breastfeeding. According to prosecutors, the unidentified woman gave her child weed through her breast milk, and the woman was sentenced to six months probation after pleading guilty. The woman's partner was also arrested for drugs.

According to acting Senior Sergeant Andrew McDonald, the woman's actions were considered child abuse. Legal experts in New Zealand says the woman may have been able to dodge the conviction if she didn't plead guilty. Warren Brookbanks, professor of law at the University of Auckland, says it would have been difficult to to prove that she intentionally gave the child weed through breast milk.
