There is no doubt that the Marvel movies have been financially successful in recent years, but we have often been left disappointed by just how safe the studio has played it with some of these properties. Each new movie from the company seems to follow the same formula and the same look as the others, which results in a carefully manicured world filled with films that rarely set out to challenge us. But the studio is looking to change all of that with director Shane Black’s Iron Man 3.

In this debut trailer for the movie, we get an ominous sense of dread and danger hovering right over our heads from the beginning. We see a beaten, battered Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) struggling to adjust to life as a hero, while his enemies lurk around every corner. The main hook of this footage is Ben Kingsley’s performance as The Mandarin, who is a completely different type of foe than we're used to.

And as we see Stark’s world crashing down around him, this trailer also shows off plenty of solid special effects and action scenes to bring in the blockbuster audience as well. Iron Man’s new Extremis suit looks slick, and the brief glimpse of the Iron Patriot should be a welcome sight for avid comic book fans, as well. But, thankfully, Iron Man 3 looks like it’s going back to its roots as a movie about the man behind the armor, instead of just following the Marvel formula, yet again.

Iron Man 3 hits theaters on May 3, 2013.
