Let's get the obvious out of the way: Assassin's Creed 3 is long as hell. So when crunch time arrived, instead of rushing through the game and missing half its content or reviewing it without experiencing everything we could, we decided to focus on the PS Vita game Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation and save our full review of Assassin's Creed 3 for later this week. We just need a little bit more time, is all.
That said, now that that pesky embargo has lifted and we're free to finally tell you about the game, we just had to share our initial impressions. And we'll say this—AC 3 is one of the most ambitious games we've ever played, not to mention hands down the best game in the series. At least, that's how it's playing out so far.
It will shock you. It will move you. It will frustrate you. And it will dole out more juicy narrative in its first dozen hours than the past games each contained in their entireties. The naval battles are cinematic and deliciously deliberate, and the new settings so far lend themselves perfectly to the series' signature free-running. Even the new controls are an improvement over past games.
Of course, it's not without its problems. But we'll reserve judgment on their severity until we've made it all the way through the game. So far, the cons pale in comparison with the pros.
The bottom line right now is that Assassin's Creed 3 should absolutely not be missed. Of course, that's just our initial opinion. Who knows? This thing could do a complete 180, and we could wind up hating it by the end. You're going to have to wait until we publish our full Assassin's Creed 3 review later this week to find out, though.
Have you picked up Assassin's Creed 3 yet? What do you think?
