Apple's Lightning Controller Chip Cracked By Chinese Firm

Inexpensive accessories for the iPhone 5 may be on the way.

Apple's plans of accessory dominance may have been spoiled by Chinese firm iPhone5mod.

Adapters and cables for Lightning, Apple's new proprietary connector, are exclusively distributed through Apple. Lightning cables currently sell for $19 and adapters range from $29 to $39. iPhone5mod claims to have successfully tested cracked Lightning controller chips, meaning third-party accessories will eventually hit the market.

iPhone5mod currently sell a Lightning cable and dock for $19.90 each. Street vendors may soon be able to provide a quick fix for your low battery on the iPhone 5. Good news for your pocket, bad news for Apple.
