These days, videogame characters get as many scripted lines as any Hollywood A-lister. Celebrity voice-actors, complex layered narratives, and monumental monologues are all par for the landscape in contemporary gaming.

But there was a time, oh yes, a time long ago, when the off-chance a character uttered a digital 'wooh' in a sports title, we sat mouth agape at the arrival of the future. Before our overly articulate contemporaries, we had to be satisfied with the sparse, 8-bit, monosyllabic utterances when we could get them.
