Facebook, to many, is considered a software company. But what many people don’t know is that it also designs hardware. No, not the fabled Facebook phone. Computers. Its state-of-the-art data centers aren’t filled with computers from Dell or HP, they’re stacked with machines designed by Facebook’s in-house engineers and manufactured by Asian component suppliers. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Facebook has an entire team of engineers whose job it is to test various hardware configurations to see which is best to handle the company’s heavy data load. That said, don’t expect a Facebook-branded computer anytime soon.
