DayZ is currently nothing more than an ambitious mod for the not-well-loved shooter Arma 2, but mod creator Dan Hall has made no secret of his plans to release it as a standalone game. Now some new details about that new version have emerged, including that facts that it'll be out this year (likely December) and that it'll be cheap.

Why? Because "it has to be," Hall said at the Eurogamer Expo yesterday.

"I like to think we're taking cautious and sensible steps at the moment," he said. "I don't really like cautious and sensible. DayZ as a mod wasn't cautious and sensible. But our first few steps have to be that. And if we can achieve that in December, then in January and February we can start to do all the cool stuff, move to more ambitious features."

Hall said a lot of things in this speech, apparently, but most notable among them are plans to thwart DayZ hackers—that's the top priority—and adds things like disease that spreads through human waste, using "household weapons," craftable splits to men broken bones more quickly, and, eventually, vehicles. He said he'd even like to remove the UI at some point.

So if Hall removes the hackers from DayZ, could you get into a standalone alpha version in December?
