Over the years, comic book crossovers have been littered with the deaths of major characters. Sometimes these are done purely for shock value, but other times they have long-lasting impacts on the entire company. Marvel has been promising us that a major death would take place in the pages of Avengers vs. X-Men #11, and now we know for sure who won’t live to see the end of the issue.

According to an article from the New York Daily News, Professor Xavier is killed by Cyclops during a climactic battle in the story. Cyclops has been taken over by the Dark Phoenix here, and strikes down his one-time mentor and father figure with pure malice.

Brian Michael Bendis, the writer of the issue, stated that, “He was this thing that was just floating around the X-books, with not the same amount of gravitas that he once had. I did point out that he would matter more in death.”

That might be true, but for X-Men fans, this is still a tough day as Professor X was the backbone of the franchise. And anyone hoping to see him resurrected from the dead might be out of luck as Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort told the site, “This is about as serious and lasting a death as you’re apt to get in one of these.”

Avengers vs. X-Men #11 goes on sale today. You can check out the images of Professor X's death below.
