Topless photos of Kate Middleton have been making the rounds over the past day or so. The NSFW photos are from Closer, a French gossip magazine that claims the candid shots were taken while the Duchess of York and Prince William were vacationing in France earlier this month.

The Royal Family is not taking the publication of these photos lightly, however.

"Their royal highnesses have been hugely saddened to learn that a French publication and a photographer have invaded their privacy in such a grotesque and totally unjustifiable manner," they said in a statement. "Their royal highnesses had every expectation of privacy in the remote house. It is unthinkable that anyone should take such photographs, let alone publish them. Officials acting on behalf of their royal highnesses are consulting with lawyers to consider what options may be available to the Duke and Duchess."

The statement goes on to compare the invasion of privacy to the incident involving Princess Diana back in 1997, when she was killed in a car accident while trying to escape a mob of paparazzi.

For her part, Middleton is keeping a straight face. She continued on her tour of the South Pacific with Prince William today, which found her in Malaysia. She kept herself covered up well.
