Things seem to be going swimmingly for Lana Del Rey right now, but they weren't always so peachy.

The singer tells British GQ that she struggled with an alcohol addiction prior to attaining fame. The bottle, not music, was her "first love."

"It's been nine years since my last drink," she says. "That's really why I got sent to boarding school aged 14— to get sober. I was a big drinker at the time. I would drink every day. I would drink alone. I thought the whole concept was so fucking cool."

Her debut album, Born to Die, features a range of songs, some of which aren't all that easy to decipher. Turns out she's referencing this darker period in her life.

"A great deal of what I wrote on Born To Die is about these wilderness years," she says. "My parents were worried, I was worried. I knew it was a problem when I liked it more than I liked doing anything else. I was like, 'I'm fucked. I am totally fucked.'"
