James Gandolfini is returning to HBO. According to Deadline, the former Sopranos star is set to headline Criminal Justice, a new show loosely based on the 2008 award-winning BBC series of the same name.
The original show consisted of two five-episode seasons, each "chronicling the journey of a person charged with murder through the justice system, and each featuring new characters and cast." The HBO version will reportedly be slightly different, however - it will be based on the plot of the first season of the British series, which followed a man who, after picking up a drunk girl and going back to her apartment for a drunken, drug-fueled night, is charged with murder when he wakes up the next morning to find her stabbed to death. Gandolfini will portray a lawyer "who trolls for clients at police precincts" and takes on the man as his client.
So far, Gandolfini has officially committed to the series, and HBO has given it a pilot order.
