By 2014, the Federal Bureau of Investigation will go nationwide with a $1 billion project that is meant to fight crime. It is being called the Next Generation Identification (NGI) and it's sole purpose is to use facial recognition technology that will work towards supposedly creating a safer nation. The system created by Lockheed Martin Transportation and Security Solutions offers “state-of-the-art biometric identification services,” in addition to providing a “flexible framework of core capabilities that will serve as a platform for multimodal functionality.”
If all of that sounds confusing, here's an excerpt from the project description that may be able to simplify things:
The NGI Program Office mission is to reduce terrorist and criminal activities by improving and expanding biometric identification and criminal history information services through research, evaluation, and implementation of advanced technology within the IAFIS environment.
Its goals are as follows:
- Public Safety and National Security
- Biometric Leadership
- Efficiency Improvements
- Privacy and Data Protection
- Smooth Transition
While there are some privacy issues that will need to be addressed in the future, will this approach make you feel safer?
