As the character of Batman has grown darker and more serious in recent decades, Alfred Pennyworth – Bruce Wayne's loyal butler and father figure – has been one of the few constants in the Caped Crusader's life. With his quick wit and calm demeanor, he has cemented himself as Batman's greatest ally and supporting character. And in this latest clip from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, we get to see Alfred in rare form.

With this movie taking place well into the future, Alfred has to be in his late 80’s or even early 90’s here, but he’s still cracking jokes at Wayne’s expense. This clip is notable because the dialogue is ripped almost word-for-word from Frank Miller’s original Dark Knight Returns story, so comic book fans can rest assured that this animated movie will be as faithful as possible to one of the best Batman tales of all time.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 will hit DVD, Blu-ray, and download on September 25.
