For those living near the rusty hulk that is the Barclays Center, the average street corner whisper was, "When are they going to paint it?" Turns out the answer is: never. The arena’s supposed to look like that. Designed by SHoP Architects, the sweeping façade features pre-rusted steel panels meant to protect the material from decaying over time. "Preweathered," that's what they call it. The exterior aside, other controversial designs aspects include the arena's sleek innards, an alarmingly chic space that is club-like in its coolness. Perhaps that's Jay-Z's touch; after all, he helped choose the silverware for the expensive suites. When the New York Times questioned readers about the Barclays's appearance, one called it "corrupt corporate design trying desperately to look hip.”
