Valve's animation suite is imperfect, but quite capable.

Valve's Source Filmmaker has only just debuted, and though it's clearly imperfect, we're impressed with what this amateur auteur did to recreate a famous scene from The Matrix (this one, to be exact).

Clearly unversed in 3D modeling, the Source short uses stand-ins from Valve games like Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 in place of Trinity, Neo, Morpheus, and the agents. But there are some things that are spot-on—the bullets falling from the helicopter, Morpheus expression as he breaks his chains and makes his escape. It's really pretty amazing.

It gives us some hope for Deep, the apocalyptic animated film that's being created using the same game engine-turned-filmmaking suite (though presumably Brown Bag Films will use their own character models).

Of course there are some criticisms to be made here, but what do you think of an amateur's effort in Source Filmmaker? Do you think the technology could support a professional-grade feature-length film? Tell us in the comments or on Twitter.
