It’s not often that a spin-off to a beloved classic gets our attention, but director Judd Apatow’s This is 40 looks like it could be one of the surprise comedies of the year. Centering on Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann’s characters from Knocked Up, this movie will explore the physical and emotional changes everyone undergoes when they hit middle-age, and how it affects their relationships with their spouses, children, and friends.

Like most of Apatow’s movies, This is 40 doesn’t tell jokes for the sake of telling jokes; instead, this latest trailer for the movie shows off an organic brand of humor that is entrenched in the situations that these characters face. While big screen comics like Adam Sandler and Sacha Baron Cohen are busy dressing in drag and insulting our intelligence, Apatow is focused on telling an engaging story with elements of comedy like James L. Brooks and Woody Allen have been doing for years. And with the unbelievable chemistry of Rudd and Mann at his disposal, Apatow might have another winner on his hands.

This is 40 debuts in theaters on December 21.
