Most soldiers don't die in battle. In 2010, for the second consecutive year, more soldiers committed suicide than died in battle, a horrifying statistic. What's worse is that military officials are well aware of this, but don't know what to do about it. You can't blame the deaths on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, when enough of the soldiers killing themselves were never in combat.
Last month, 38 Army members killed themselves, the highest number since the Army began monitoring suicide rates. The suicide rate for soldiers is up 22 percent from last year, and the fear is that the number could soon get to one suicide per day. It's awful to think that soldiers need the most protection from themselves.
