Rumor has it that the next generation iPhone will be announced in September and released shortly thereafter, and now we have news from Sharp that could support that timetable. In a press conference covered by Reuters, Sharp president Takashi Okuda said his company will be delivering the display for the device this month.

"Shipments will start in August," he said.

Sharp is one of three companies that is reportedly manufacturing the display for the new iPhone (to Apple's proprietary specifications, of course). The other two are LG and Japan Display Inc.

The display for the new iPhone is expected to be larger and taller than that of previous iPhones, measuring something close to 4" compared to 3.5". It will likely be a Retina display with new "in-cell" touch sensors as opposed to a separate touch panel, making the display portion of the phone thinner than before.
