Android is going to redefine the smartphone with NASA's new PhoneSat program. The project is going to launch miniature satellites powered by Nexus One handsets running Google's Android OS.

The PhoneSat project is fairly inexpensive for NASA, with each PhoneSat prototype only costing $3,500. With three projected launches for later this year, the diminutive units which measure in at only four pounds, will pave the way for low cost space exploration. The first model to launch, the PhoneSat 1.0, has minimal functions but will inform the team at NASA if the Nexus One can be functional during space exploration. Little did we know that our smartphones were mini astronauts.
