Microsoft has been on a tear this summer, releasing a host of new products and services including its new operating system, Windows 8, and a completely revamped version of its Office software. With all that newness, Microsoft felt it was time to switch up its look by ditching the logo its used since 1987 for something fresher.
The new logo features the word "Microsoft" in a light type next to a flat, color-blocked Windows symbol. According to Jeff Hansen, Microsoft's general manager of brand strategy, the new logo is meant to "signal the heritage but also signal the future — a newness and freshness." As the Seattle Times points out, it's the first Microsoft logo to include more than text. The symbol is supposed to represent the diversity of the new products Microsoft will be selling.
