There's a great assortment of keyboards available for your iPad if you can't deal with pecking out long missives on the digital QWERTY. For the most part, they're all thin and light and meant to be toted alongside your tablet. But if you're looking for something a little more substantial when at the crib, designer Austin Yang may have something you'd be interested in.
The iTypewriter uses mechanical typewriter keys that are connected to levers which are capped with soft-touch tips that tap the corresponding letter on the iPad's soft keyboard. The idea is to give the user a more tactile experience. However, if you watch the video below, you'll notice some irregularities with the iTypewriter.
First: It's not a QWERTY keyboard. Getting people to adjust to a new keyboard layout will be incredibly difficult/impossible. Also, there's no spacebar. Both issues probably account for the slow-as-Rick-Ross-in-a-marathon typing speed.
Also, as Michael Trei from DVICE pointed out, "the other pitfall could come as soon as Apple decides to tweak the layout of the virtual keyboard or change the size of the iPad, something that could happen sooner rather than later."
Still, it's a dope idea. One we hope makes it into production. With a few modifications, of course.
