The star of the new movies Celeste and Jesse Forever (in theaters tomorrow), For a Good Time, Call... (out on August 31), and 10 Years (September 21) talks stoners and sex shops in our game of “Would You Rather.”
This feature appears in Complex's August/September issue.
As told to Tara Aquino (@t_akino)
I’d rather win Biggest Flirt than Class Clown. In high school, everyone told me I had a great personality and sense of humor, but I wanted to be the girl who boys liked because she was pretty, on top of being funny. I was boy crazy.
I’d rather work the register at a sex shop than operate a phone sex line. I’m sure you’d see interesting characters and have great stories to tell. You have to have a constant stream of creativity as a phone sex operator.
I’d rather be known as a stoner than a drunk. There’s a greater chance of you hurting someone else and making an ass of yourself as a drunk. You can get in trouble smoking too much weed, but at least stoners are gentler spirits.
I’d rather make someone cry than gross them out. I wouldn’t want to say or do something hurtful, but I’m more interested in the interconnected human spirit than fart jokes. I prefer situational or character-based humor to gross-out gags and comedic set pieces.
I’d rather be the crazy friend than the levelheaded friend. For where I am in my life right now—in between jobs, trying to live life to the fullest and make everything an adventure—I’d rather be out of control. But just for now.
I’d rather star in a period piece than a horror movie. While I appreciate horror movies, I’d love the opportunity to do something transformative, especially because people see me as contemporary. There’s a lot to explore in my career that could take me back to another time. A period piece would be an incredible game of dress-up, too.
I’d rather be the artist than the muse. I want the power that comes from expressing myself creatively and putting something back into the world. Being someone’s muse would be flattering but it could get old fast.
