With only a few months to go until the movie’s release, Entertainment Weekly has debuted the first picture of Daniel Day-Lewis as President Abraham Lincoln from director Steven Spielberg’s upcoming biopic, Lincoln. And just from looking at the image, the resemblance between Day-Lewis and the 16th President of the United States is downright spooky.
In an interview with the site, Spielberg said that the movie starts with, “Lincoln’s realization that the Emancipation Proclamation, the thing he is most known for, was simply a war powers act that would easily be struck down by any number of lawyers after the cessation of hostilities after the Civil War.” He continued, “He needed to abolish slavery by constitutional measure — and that’s where we start.”
This is a movie that the director has been trying to get off the ground for years, so there has been no shortage of prep time and research on Spielberg’s part. “Lincoln had a very, very complicated – and at the same time, extremely clear — inner life,” the director told the site. “He thought things out. He talked things out. He argued both sides of every issue. And he was very careful in making any decision. As a matter of fact, his opponents and his enemies criticized him often for being impossibly slow to a decision.”
Aside from Day-Lewis, Lincoln also touts a collection of A-list actors such as Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, Jackie Earle Haley, and plenty more. Lincoln will hit theaters on November 16.
