A school in Grand Island, Nebraska, has banned a deaf three-year-old from using sign language to articulate his name because administrators believes the required gesture too closely resembles a gun. Hunter Spanjer communicates through Signing Exact English, or SEE, so what do they expect the boy to do exactly?

The school adheres to a strict policy that prohibits "any instrument...that looks like a weapon," and refused to discuss the matter in detail, but said they were trying to reach a compromise with Spanjer's parents. The school's policy is understood, but this situation isn't as black and white as they'd like to believe it is.
