Legendary comic book artist Joe Kubert has passed away at the age of 85, according to Bleeding Cool. Kubert is best known for creating characters like Sgt. Rock, Hawkman, and Tor during a career that spanned over seven decades. Over the past few years, Kubert continued to work in comics, and he even provided covers for DC’s Before Watchmen event in recent months. The company also recently announced a new project with the artist titled Joe Kubert Presents, which was set to hit stores in October. There is no information regarding the current state of the series yet.

Kubert elevated comic art from something that would normally be scoffed at into something rich with meticulous detail and vision. Kubert is also the father of Andy and Adam Kubert, who are both superstar artists in their own right. Take a minute to look through the slideshow above to see the brilliance that Kubert poured onto every comic book page.
