As much as we, like most other film lovers, bitch and moan about the oversaturation of 3D in current cinema, the occasional project does come along that (momentarily) justifies the celluloid-enhancing technique. And there’s perhaps no better example than Piranha 3D, a totally self-aware, campy blast of sleaziness and bloodshed.
Give director/co-writer Alexandre Aja tons of respect—he completely understood the material and delivered on all of its sordid promise. With killer fish chomping through bikini-clad spring breakers, Aja’s three-dimensional slaughterhouse isn’t above a slow-motion underwater ballet starring two naked beauties, or having a piranha spit a dude’s junk at the camera.
