After a few down years, it looks like director Ang Lee is back to form in this debut trailer for the adaptation of Life of Pi, one of the most popular books in recent memory. Revolving around a young Indian boy who gets stranded on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger, this book explored spirituality and faith in a way that has touched millions of readers since its release in 2001.

In this trailer we see Lee going for a distinct, colorful style that gives the movie a dreamlike quality in every frame. The world here is completely his own as vibrant oranges, yellows, and reds pop right off of the screen at us. And even though there isn't much dialogue to speak of in this footage, the tone and emotion is clearly evident from the start. Newcomer Suraj Sharma's performance as Pi also looks very promising so far, which is made even more impressive by the fact that he's acting alongside a CGI tiger.

We're still not sure how this will look in 3D when it's released, but like Scorsese did with Hugo, we can easily see Lee being able to master the form without resorting to gimmicky tactics. And with this film being released right towards the end of the year, you can bet that 20th Century Fox is banking on this making some noise when the Academy Awards roll around.

Life of Pi hits theaters on November 21.
