The Motor City has its share of problems these days, but there's a history of coldness in the D. To this day, the 12th Street Riot (also known as the 1967 Detroit Riot) remains among the worst in the history of the country, in the same class as the New York City Draft Riots and the L.A. Riots.

On July 23, 1967, tensions over national issues such as segregation, employment, education, housing, and policing reached a breaking point in Detroit. The response was five days of chaos that ended with 43 individuals dead, 7,000 arrested, and 1,400 buildings destroyed.

Today marks the 45th anniversary of the riots—get familiar with these images.
