Country: England
Director: Bruce Robinson
Stars: Paul McGann, Richard E. Grant

A poignant character study by way of darkly hilarious buddy comedy, Bruce Robinson's Withnail & I is a rather sad look at a pair of wannabe actors whose professional inefficiencies and self-destructive habits (i.e., drugs) continue to derail their futures. Robinson, a veteran screenwriter who made his directorial debut with this edgy gem, cares as much about his pair of protagonists' emotional complexities as he does giving them a string of very funny, self-effacing one-liners.

Withnail & I is considered by many to be the best British comedy ever made; though we'd argue that point, we're still all for it.
