Movie plots don't get much simpler than that of Play Time: A Frenchman (played by the film's writer-director, Jacques Tati) has to get in touch with someone in America, but his mundane objective quickly turns problematic once he gets lost. What gives the entertainingly delirious Play Time its undeniable brilliance is how Tati stretches out a bare-bones premise into a multi-layered examination of how routine occurrences and seemingly nondescript neighbors can become enchanting if one would just open his or her eyes once in a while.
