Seth MacFarlane's directorial debut, Ted, is already paying off huge for 20th Century Fox after it made $54.1 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This total beat out The Hangover for the highest grossing opening weekend for a non-sequel R-rated comedy in history.
Also making news is the fact that Magic Mike scored an impressive $39.2 million during its opening weekend. This is the first time in history that two rated-R movies opened with higher than $20 million on the same weekend. Apparently, people are getting tired of having their movies handled with kid gloves.
The big test for both movies will be whether or not they can sustain this success when they run into The Amazing Spider-Man on July 3. Despite the great reviews that Ted and Magic Mike have received, we have a feeling that the Wall Crawler will still win out.
