Rumor has it that BioWare and EA's Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO hasn't been doing as well as the companies had hoped, and now they're making a drastic change that could shake things up: the game is going free-to-play up to level 50.

No more admission fee in the form of a purchase price; no more monthly subscription charge on your credit card statement; starting in the fall, the only time The Old Republic will cost you money is if you engage in a microtransactions to remove the slight "restrictions" BioWare will be imposing on F2P players.

The subscription model will still be available, and subscribers who are paying monthly will be given some amount of in-game currency with which to purchase upgrades that non-subscribers will have to spend real money on. Those who subscribe before the transition happens will also get some goodies.

Check out BioWare's FAQ for the details. Will you jump in/back in to SW: TOR now that it won't cost you anything up front? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter.
