If we learned one thing from the 2012 Mobile World Congress it's that every smartphone maker is looking to get quad-core processors into their devices. Samsung, LG, and HTC already have smartphones that feature chips with four cores, and if DigiTimes' report is to be believed, Apple will join that short list when it releases the new iPhone.
Apple has yet to adopt quad-core processors in any of its devices. The iPhone 4S has a dual-core A5 chip, while the new iPad has the A5X that has a upgraded graphics processor. DigiTime's sources say Apple will build its quad-core chip atop the Samsung's Exynos 4 quad-core processor architecture.
The A5X that powers the new iPad is plenty fast and was able to hande pretty much anything we tossed its way. Is a quad-core processor really needed? Especially in a smartphone? Then again, there's no such thing as too much power. We just hope the battery is equally powerful.
