Report: Apple Maps Headed To Macs

Not just for iOS.

None

One of the most anticipated new features of iOS 6 is Apple's all-new, built-from-the-ground-up Maps app, and now it looks like the new mapping software may have a future on more than just iOS devices.

A developer by the name of Cody Cooper has discovered a reference to Intel-based graphics chipsets in the developer's preview of the Maps application, despite the fact that no iOS devices feature such chipsets. The section of code is suspected to be in place for use on certain Intel-based Macs running OS X, which could be made to support the Maps application at some point in the near future.

Bringing Apple Maps to the Mac would be consistent with Apple's goal to achieve continuity between OS X and iOS, as well as with its recent efforts to ween its customers off popular Google products like Google Maps. It would mean that in the future, Mac users looking for directions may sooner open an app in the dock than initiate a search within the browser.
