San Quentin State Prison, located in San Quentin, CA, is not only the oldest prison in the state, it's the largest in the United States. Open since 1852, San Quentin houses the state's lone death row for male inmates.

Well-known inmates include actorDanny Trejo, former Crip leader Stanley "Tookie" Williams, and Black Panthers Eldridge Cleaver and George Jackson. The latter was shot dead in the prison yard back in 1971 during an alleged prison break attempt that many believe to have been a set-up.
