Ernest Borgnine, the unconventional leading man of dozens of films, has passed away at the age of 95, according to MSNBC. Harry Flynn, the actor's spokesman, told the Associated Press that Borgnine died of renal failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife and children at his side.
After receiving his big break in 1953's From Here to Eternity, Borgnine went on to win the 1955 Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the low budget film Marty. He then became a household name by starring in the TV comedy, McHale's Navy, for four years. After the show ended, Borgnine starred in dozens of films and television shows over the next four decades.
Borgnine had four failed marriages during his lifetime, including one to Ethel Merman that lasted less than six weeks. However, Borgnine's fifth marriage to Tova Traesnaes proved to be the real deal, and the actor had been married to her since 1973.
