In this haunting story from southern Michigan (by way of Yoknapatawpha County), a woman kept the body of her dead lover in their home for 18 months because she was lonesome, and wanted him around to watch NASCAR races on the TV. Linda Chase, 72, cleaned and dressed the body of Charles Zigler. She would set the body upright in a chair in the living room of the small house they shared.

"It’s not that I’m heartless... I didn’t want to be alone. He was the only guy who was ever nice to me," Chase said, immediately destroying the callousness of anyone in earshot.

This real-life "A Rose for Emily" might lead to legal trouble for Chase, who continued to cash Zigler's benefit checks after he passed.

Thankfully, Chase reports that Zigler didn't smell.
