In a growth spurt that is nothing short of remarkable, Instagram has announced that it now has over 80 million users, which is 50 million more than it had in April.

Since then, of course, the photo-based social network has expanded to Android and been acquired (for $1 billion) by Facebook. And users of the rapidly growing service have shared four billion photos.

The numbers are impressive for an app built and run by a small team. Instagram currently has just 14 employees.

“We now have >5.7m users per employee,” infrastructure engineer Rick Branson wrote on Twitter.
