Even though Hellboy II: The Golden Army was a critical hit, the movie failed to live up to lofty box office expectations. Why? Well, unfortunately it hit theaters a mere week before The Dark Knight was released and broke nearly every box office record imaginable. This led to some cold feet on the studio’s part, and a Hellboy III was left in limbo.

Since then, director Guillermo del Toro and star Ron Perlman have gone on to do other projects. But now, according to Entertainment Weekly, the duo might be ready to hop back into the Hellboy universe if all the stars align.

“I can say publicly that now we are together in trying [to do Hellboy 3],” del Toro told the site. Del Toro has publicly claimed things like this before on various projects, but the words by Perlman himself make us even more optimistic that this will happen.

“The [first] two movies were really set up to have this unbelievable resolve,” said Perlman. “Everything that was done in both movies was leading up to this destiny, written in stone, of what Hellboy has been summoned to Earth to do. To not do it, particularly in light of the scope that Guillermo is thinking of for the resolve, would be in my mind a little bit of a shame.”

With del Toro in the middle of production on Pacific Rim, it will be a while before a third Hellboy hits theaters. But based on these quotes, we finally believe it will actually happen.
