Gamestop Could Start Selling Used Digital Games

After a court ruling that selling digital games is legal, why not?

None

Gamestop makes the bulk of its revenue from used game sales, and they could soon expand that practice into the digital realm (in Europe, at least).

"It’s very interesting," GameStop CEO Paul Raines told Gamespot. "There are some technologies out there in Europe, and we’ve looked at a couple that are involved. We’re interested; it’s not a meaningful business yet. Right now we’re not seeing that as a huge market, but I think we’re on the leading edge. There are a few companies, a few startups, out there that we’ve talked to that are doing this."

His statement comes after a European court ruled that the sale of used games is protected for consumers, whether those games are in physical or digital form. In other words, publishers and developers can't legally do anything to stop you from reselling downloaded games, as long as you no longer have access to the games you sell.

No wonder Gamestop wants to get a piece of that. Of course, it remains to be seen whether digital distributors like Steam and Origin will ever facilitate the transfer of game licenses, whether or not the practice is deemed legal.
