Despite major movie studios and box office tracking corporation Rentrak vowing not to report box office numbers out of respect for the victims of the tragic shooting which took place in a Colorado theater just before a midnight screening for The Dark Knight Rises, figures have still made it to the press anyway. According to Vulture, officials still passed reports of earnings for The Dark Knight Rises to The New York Times, and the paper is reporting that the film earned just over $160 million, making it the third biggest opening weekend ever.
