After The Dark Knight broke nearly every box office record back in 2008, the Warner Brothers executives were in full-on sequel mode in order to make the third Batman movie as profitable as possible. One of the studio's ideas was to include the fan-favorite foe, The Riddler, in the next movie. Earlier played to perfection by Frank Gorshin, and later by Jim Carrey, the studio wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to play the cane-twirling Edward Nigma in the last chapter of the trilogy.

In an interview with Empire Magazine (via Batman-News), screenwriter David Goyer told the magazine that the studio said, “it’s gonna be The Riddler, and we want it to be Leonardo DiCaprio."

Obviously that idea never materialized because Christopher Nolan apparently nixed it. However, DiCaprio would be an inspired choice for a Batman foe, even though another brightly-colored baddie might have been a little too close to what Heath Ledger did as The Joker.

Would DiCaprio be able to pull off the role? And would you want him over Bane? Sound off below.
