As part of an initiative to inspire better digital advertising—currently marked by the stasis of banner ads over the past 15 years—Google tapped the “work that defined the [advertising] industry 40 years ago and the people who defined the industry 40 years ago,” capturing the process in an hour-long documentary.

Titled “Project Re:Brief,” the film, directed by Doug Pray, debuted today at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and is now streaming on YouTube. It features CLIO Award-wining mad men such as Amil Gargano (Volvo’s “Drive It Like You Hate It” campaign), Harvey Gabor (Coca Cola’s “Hilltop”), Paula Green (Avis’ “We Try Harder”), and Howie Cohen & Bob Pasqualina (Alka Seltzer’s “I Can’t Believe I Ate The Whole Thing”). All had retired and left the industry altogether—and even New York, for some—so the film is as much about the marriage of their original ideas and modern technology as it is about their comeback and life’s work.
