7. The Endless Summer (1966)
Director: Bruce Brown
Stars: Robert August, Michael Hynson, Lord "Tally Ho" Blears
Vacation destination: Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti and Hawaii. Really, wherever the waves are.
There are movies about vacations, and there are movies that take you on vacation: Bruce Brown's timeless documentary is fully the later. The viewer is transported to a variety of exotic locales as Brown follows a gang of young surfers who go globetrotting in search of the perfect wave, hoping to extend summer into infinity by following the season around the world.
Brown's gorgeous visuals, alongside his sentiment about making summer last forever, is universally inspiring, surf skills or not, and broke important new ground upon release, bringing the sport to new areas of the world, and introducing surfers to the then unknown surf sites of Cape Town, South Africa, where some of the world's best breaks can be found.
