Director: Howard Deutch
Stars: John Candy, Dan Aykroyd
Vacation destination: A lake resort in Pechoggin, Wisconsin
No list of summer vacation movies is complete without John Candy and Dan Aykroyd's misadventures in the wilderness, The Great Outdoors.
The two timeless comedians are perfect foils to one another as in-laws at odds. Candy plays Ripley, an easygoing, typical American dad, and Aykroyd play Roman, a materialistic and uptight paternal figure who is forced to play copacetic when they camp together in an isolated lake house. This John Hughes-directed comedy isn't perfect (the obligatory "nature comedy" plot devices are dutifully fulfilled) but the script's lacking is easily overlooked in light of the fireworks Candy and Aykroyd create when their comedic forces collide.
