It began with the fliers, yellow sheets of paper that popped up in Bethel, Alaska, proclaiming the opening of a Taco Bell franchise in a town where the closest taco purveyor was 400 miles away, in Anchorage.

The fliers lied. It was never to be, a Taco Bell opening on America's Independence Day in Bethel. The Anchorage Daily Mail declared it "an evil hoax." Denali Foods Inc., the company responsible for Taco Bells in Alaska, said it had no plans of opening a Taco Bell there, nor did it have any idea who planted the lying fliers.

For now, Bethel remains Taco Bell-less.
